Introductions & Expectations

Class: Introduce yourself (name, major, other interests if you want to state them), and tell us why you are in the class (ummm, likely "to fulfill a requirement" :) or some other reason) and what you think the class will be about, or what you hope to learn in the class.

I'll start: I'm Dr. Cate, your instructor, and I wrote my dissertation in feminist philosophy of science, which was grounded in feminist epistemology. I love feminist epistemology and I hope you will learn to like it at the very least (but it is okay if you don't).

  1. My name is James Green, I do go by Jim. I will be majoring in business administration in the TAP program once I complete 2 courses with a 2.0 or better I am planning on doing much better than 2.0 though. I am 35 Years old, married for 12 Years to my wife Rene, And have 3 children. Sean my oldest is 11, Samantha is 9 and Simon is 6. My current interests are wide ranging from gardening to kayaking. I work for Teve pharmaceuticals as a mechanic, prior to working at Teva I was an auto mechanic for 11 years for a Chrysler dealership. I am taking this class because it was one of the only classes I could get into this late in the fall. I do enjoy working for Teva and with the encouragement, and financial backing of my department director I am now starting to collage with great enthusiasm , excitement, and a lot of nervousness. When I was of the age that most people would attend collage I was following the Grateful Dead.

  2. My name is Michelle Crowley. I am a Theatre/Communication major with a minor in Creative Writing. I love traveling and my current job lets me travel for free or really cheap everywhere in the world Delta Airlines or the Sky Team fleet flies. I tend to be a rather grounded individual (in a cognitive sense) and Philosophy makes my head spin. I took this class because it fit the requirement and it fit into my schedule. I’m a little apprehensive about this class because, as it was stated, philosophy is like being in a foreign country. From experience, it takes a few days to adjust to being in a strange land with a different language, different customs, and different way of thinking. I have no idea what new things we will discover in this foreign land, but I’m sure I will be able to take them back when I return to my native country.

  3. My name is Megan Schnelle, I am a freshmen. I graduated from Newport Central Catholic last spring. I played softball in high school. I was a nursing major, but after a few weeks of anatomy I realized it was not for me right now. I am not sure what I am going to major in now. When I dropped my anatomy class I needed another class and I was too late to get into most of them, so I got into this class. Two summers ago I traveled to Belieze on a mission trip, and I have been selected to go on another one this coming summer but not sure where I want to go to yet. I am the oldest of five kids in my family. I’m not really sure what to expect about this class, this is my first Philosophy class. I am excited for this class, but I can be shy and quiet when I am around a lot of people I do not really know. This is probably not a good thing in regards to this class, due to all the discussions, but I want to work on that.

  4. My name is Lyndsey Armbruster. I am majoring in Computer Information Systems with a minor in Business Administration. I took this class because I needed a philosophy course. However I took this particular class because it sounded interesting compared to some of the other philosophy classes offered. I hope to learn from the course how women's opinions in society were viewed in the terms of the way society thought.

  5. My name is Nick Zeiser. I am a senior Business Administration and Communication major and intend to graduate in May. I have no idea what I would like to do with my life upon graduation. I am a member of the baseball team here at Thomas More. I really enjoy watching movies and coaching a youth football team. I signed up for this class because philosophy is required and my coach(also a professor) recommended Dr. Sherron. I think this class will be interesting and insightful considering that I am not a woman and have never studied Feminism or any aspect of it.

  6. My name is TJ Souder. I am a senior Communication and Business Admin. major. I intend to graduate in May, as well as play baseball for the Thomas More Saints. I hanging out with friends and meeting new people. I signed up for this class because I have yet to take a Philosophy credit. I think I'll find this class very interesting because this is my first Philosophy class and with it being concentrated on Feminism I feel I will end up learning a lot on the topic.

  9. My name is Leslie Brooks and I am majoring in General Studies which suggests I am either indecisive or have commitment issues. :) I work for the Kroger Co. as the General Manager for their Technical Support Center. In my line of work, there are very few unknowns...no question that does not have a clearly defined answer...or so I've told myself. I expect this class might help me reassess that assumption and encourage me to look at things from a different perspective. Interesting facts (NOT in chronological order):
    • I have two children (17 yr. old son and 16 yr. old daughter).
    • I was in the Navy for 4 years as a Cryptologic Technician
    • I've worked at the Pentagon
    • I was a hair model (once)
    • I was a disk jockey for a country radio station when I was 16.
    • My home town was once billed (and may still be) as the "sock capital of the world"
    • I was a volunteer E.M.T in Virginia and was on a state training video for the jaws of life
    • I have two dogs (Oscar and Buttercup) and one cat (Magnolia) - all mixed breeds, two from different pounds (Buttercup is not from the pound)
    • I was born in Michigan and raised in Alabama

  10. Hi! My name is Michelle Snead. I am a third year Nursing major. I am signed up for this class because its something my advisor suggested, and I need to fill my Philosophy requirements. I am not sure of what to expect from this class, its all new to me, but I am looking forward to finding out. Now, a little bit about myself for those of you who care to know. I am originally from Ohio in a little town called Pleasant Hill. I have a younger brother who will be 19 this coming month. I currently work at an eye doctor in Taylor Mill which I love. I like to shop, travel, and spend time with friends and family. I also look forward to meeting and getting to know all of you in the class.

  11. Hey there my name is Hannah Hartman. I am a third year nursing student. This is my very first philosophy class. Simply out of chance Feminist Epistemology happened to fit my schedule and fulfill the needed core requirement. I’ve always thought I would enjoy philosophy because I enjoy thinking. And I love deep, meaningful conversations, so philosophical debates would seem to suit me well. Anything thought provoking is usually worthwhile and holds my interest. Epistemology sounds like a daunting subject, especially for a beginner, but I am going to approach it with an open mind.
As for me, I like to be creative, write, paint, sew, and lately I like to knit scarves except I have spent a year making the same one, but I feel I am making progress.

  12. My name is Stacey Bryla. I am a third year nursing student. I have two small children, both girls. I am married and work part-time as a bartender at a local restaurant. As a nursing student I have transferred twice and am very glad that I ended up at Thomas More; I love it here! As far as philosophy and why I took this course, this is my very first philosophy course and I'm not exactly sure what to expect. I looked up epistemology over the summer and found that it was the the "study of knowledge...or words". I took this class because it was only half the semester and fit nicely (well sort of) into my schedule. I am looking forward to learning lots of new things in this class.

  13. Hey my name is Donnacha Higgins and i'm 20 years old and i'm from Ireland. I'm here in Thomas More on exchange for one semester and i'm really enjoying it so far! I chose this class because I was in political science and dropped it, so this class fitted into my schedule nicely so i chose it. I currently work in Human Resources and hope to soon acheive my degree is Business Administration. After I complete this class, along with Public Relations, I will start the TAP program in January. 15. Hi my name is Krissy Klare. I'm a third year nursing student. I have two young children both boys Miles 3yrs old and Keaton 2yrs old. I work part time waiting tables in a restaurant and don't have much free time on my hands for hobbies right now! I transferred to TMC last year (by the way I love it!)from Cincinnati State. I was previously in the Sonography program and had a change of heart. I took this class because I need two philosophy classes to graduate and be "well rounded" so to speak. I choose this particular class because it fit fairly well into my schedule and it was only for half the semester (aka condense the time frame of my stress). I've never taken philosophy before so this should be interesting for me, not exactly sure what to anticipate yet? I hope to enjoy the class and have a greater understanding and appreciation for philosophy at the end of the class.

  17. Hello, my name is Kim Hamann, and this is my first-ever blogging experience. It's taken me much longer to figure out the interworkings of the blogging world than it will for me to re-write this post, I'm hoping. Anyway, I am a Bio major/Soc minor and am in the process of applying to grad school in physical anthropology. Hopefully I get in somewhere cool. I have a pet rat named Toaster and enjoy euchre and the TV show "Friends". This is my first philosophy class, and while I am excited about the subject, the nature of the material does not come naturally to me. Sometimes, when it's abstract and icky, I just have to pretend I believe it, and that makes it much simpler to read, kind of like believing in Santa Claus makes Christmas much more fun. Try it this year.

  18. Hello, my name is Kyle Wewe, and this is also like many my first blogging experience. I am a 5th year senior who is majoring in sports marketing and entertainment plus business admin. I also play on the baseball team and I am a starting pitcher. One thing about me is I am a farm boy through and through and like anything outdoors. Hunting, fishing, hiking, and I just started rock climbing this summer so thats pretty exciting too.

  19. I was looking at some of the threads and noticed that I didn't post on this one and thought I should.

My name is Aaron Monk. I am a Jr. and a Sports & Entertainment Marketing major. I am not sure at the moment what my career choice will be yet, but I would like it to involve sports in some way. I am planning on attending law school after Thomas More. I am going to be honest, I signed up for this class because of the time. After reading some of the material I am a little lost, but eager to learn more.

  20. Hello, my name is Stacey Knapp. I am a senior middle school education major with concentrations in social studies and science. I played soccer all four years at Thomas More and just finished out my last season. After graduation, I plan to get my masters in school counseling and would like to coach a girls high school soccer team. I signed up for this course in order to fulfill a requirement. However, since being in the class i have found it to be challenging but very interesting!

  21. Hello my name is Aimee Ryan, I am a sophomore and sociology major. I transferred from NKU in the spring where I was a biology major but recently decided to change. I am the youngest of three girls, and am about ten years younger than my closest sister. I play volleyball for Thomas More and have two jobs depending on the time of year. I have taken philosophy classes before but decided to take this class in place of a dropped class, but it also sounded interesting. I was unsure of what female epistemology would involve and felt like I could benefit from the experience. I am happy I took on the class and feel I have broadened my understanding of the subject.

  22. My name is Chris Rickels, I am a senior Political Science and Communication major. I will be attending graduate school for my M.Ed. in Student Affairs Administration, and I hope to go on to a Ph.D. in Communication...or something cool. Um, I am taking this class because I begged Dr. Sherron to teach it, so I thought it would be a good idea to sign up for it--or else. I do a lot of stuff at TMC...like Student Government, Resident Student Association...basically anything regarding Student Life and I'm there. I really enjoyed the class, and I'm glad I took it. I learned a lot about knowledge, and I think I have a pretty good understanding of it.
